In the US, shears like this are equipped with straps that the operator wears on his or her wrist that actually pulls their hands up as the blade comes down so it's impossible to accidentally leave your hands under the blade. Some machines also have two buttons that have to be pressed to activate it, also ensuring that your hands are elsewhere.

@@stephenwalker6939 exactly. I'd say the simplest safety mechanism and most commonly used is the two stiff buttons method. They're generally stiff so that you can press them accidentally with an elbow or something, so they need firm pressure using both hands. So as long as you're the only one operating the machine, you should be safe. (Also as long as the buttons are hard-wired to the blade motor, and don't go through some computer, otherwise a bug in the software can always cause it to ignore the buttons)

I work with a paper cutter. As impressive as that blade is, the guy who drops off sharpened blades had something to show me one day. It was the blade to a zamboni. It was pretty massive. And sharp enough to remove a finger just by sliding it across the edge. Pretty cool...

The "glass" is either CR39 or high index material, not glass glass. It's just a lens edger cutting the shape out based on the tracer paired with it, watching it everyday at work
