I am female over 50. I taught myself everything from watching construction work and KZfaq, and haunting the aisles at Home Depot. The projects shown here are very easy, but appear hard because you don't know where to begin. The hardest part is not the project. It is research on tool selection so you don't waste your money. Here are some tips for you. Pick a project. Buy only the tools required. NEVER BUY CHEAP TOOLS!! Buy decent quality so it is a joy to use and you feel happy when you use them. Tools are your friends. Garden, kitchen, sewing, jewelry, DIY, wood working, metalsmithing, all wonderful tools! Tools free you up from dependency on others. Be familiar with DIY tools and good luck with your projects. Tools shown in order of appearance with costs: Dewalt and Bosch - Usually top of line Makita, Milwaukee - Middle cost Rigid, Ryobi - Low cost If you buy cordless, stick with the same brand for most, so batteries are interchangeable. I use Dewalt only for cordless tools because I can buy a lot of cordless gardening tools from Dewalt as well such as leaf blower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, Sawzall, Chain saw 12". I find Dewalt more user friendly in design - good LED lights in front, variable switches, etc. However they are pricier. Not all Dewalt tools are good. The Bosch Angle Grinder is much better. Corded Drill and Driver - $100 pair - any brand roughly. 20V Cordless Dewalt Battery Drill and Driver - On sale at Home Depot now for $200 - Drill, Driver, 2 Lithium batteries, charger, bag. Very good deal. XR is Brushless, no XR is with carbon brushes. Buy the 885 or 887 models - good deals. Brushless simply means the carbon brushes are inside the tool which will eventually die out, so don't waste money buying 'brushless'. Carbon brushes are simply springs attached to a little block of carbon that looks like pencil lead. You unscrew some piece of the tool and replace them every 1-2 yrs. Get genuine Dewalt, not Amazon fakes. Makita is also good. I like Dewalt for these two tools, as they are very intelligently built. Buy these and they are user friendly, last forever. Forget corded, pain in the A**. Your drill should be chuckless (no key needed), variable speed, At least 1/2" size, and must have the hammer function. Impact Driver (screwdriver) should be chuckless, variable speed, have good LED lights in front. The 887 models are very nice but pricey. As a compromise, buy the 885 Drill and 887 Driver. When buying a bundled kit, make sure that you have all the functionality I listed. Sometimes they sell you a cheaper model! Drill bits: $10 a box. Titanium or Tungsten coated for wood, and separate ones for metal. Get also masonry drill bits - only the size you need for your project. You can drill thru concrete wall, make holes in ceramic bowls to convert to planters, drill thru glass and any tile. Wear goggles!!! Spray water on tile, ceramic, glass as you drill and set drill to 'hammer' mode. Start at an angle so bit does not skip. Non-hammer mode will not drill thru these materials. Hammer mode for glass, etc. Regular drill mode for wood and metal. Circular saw Cordless 20V Dewalt is $100. A cheaper alternative to a table saw but unless you are cutting wood at Home Depot parking lot or doing a lot of mobile builds away from a power source, no point. If you need a small mobile saw, get the cordless battery version. Dewalt is useful but be aware they make a smaller blade size so less choices in blades, and I don't like being forced to buy one brand. Use a corded Makita instead. Concrete float, sponge, and trowel for setting tile - $10 each or less. Buy grooved as per tile size. Painting: use a roller or brush and avoid major costs. If you still need to spray paint, then buy the Porter Cable 6 gal pancake compressor that any woman can lift easily for $149 + 3 tools that come as a kit: brad nailer, finish nailer, stapler. Look for Home Depot deals. Go to Harbor Freight and get paint sprayer. Start spraying. Harbor freight: Nitrile gloves $13 pack of 50 at 0.9 mil, goggles $2 each. Wear a shower cap for painting. Large holes in wood - use Hole saw set $10 - attach one to your drill and make a hole thru wood. If you need to make a partial hole only, use Forstner bits -more expensive. 2:34 - This is a Chop saw/ Miter Saw. You don't need this to start out with. Its meant for chopping strips of wood. You can do the same with a table saw or circular saw. These run cheap from $150 - $800. Lot of options: Bevel, dual bevel, sliding arm, compound, laser guide, corded, cordless, etc. A decent Dewalt one with most functions runs $650 + tax. You do not need this. 2:38 - This is a Kreg Jig for joinery. When you want an invisible join in a drawer for example, this allows you to drill holes on inside so screw is hidden. A bit pricey from $30 - $100 but very useful ... IF you are making cabinets or drawers or have lots of invisible joins. You do not need this. Use a simple butt join instead unless you want to ramp up your skills. 3:01 - The stapler used here comes free when you buy the air compressor I mentioned above. Load up staples of any size, turn on the compressor and boom, boom, boom you are in business. Wear goggles!!! Do any piece of upholstery professionally! Best wood glue: Titebond Premium II (not I, not III) under $10. Do not use Elmers, Gorilla, Spray adhesives. Construction glue - thick pasty, holds up anything - Loctite Power Grab Caulking tube + Caulking Gun $20 both. Do not buy tubes of glue your fingers will fall off from squeezing. Let the caulking gun do the work. Tiling - it is super easy to tile, but as precise as making a cake. Follow directions exactly about mixing time, proportions, etc. Use MAPEI products from Lowes - the best. Thinset Mortar - mix with water or Polymer (does not crack with earthquakes or in a van build) - spread with a trowel, stick your tile on it, let dry. Grout - sanded or unsanded - mix with water or Grout Maximizer (Polymer) and fill in the cracks. Wipe off with yellow sponge (don't use any other type). Let dry. Grout Maximizer is a Mapei product from Italy. It has a built in sealant. No cracking and falling off, no sealant required every year. Use it! 4:21 - Jigsaw - $45 Ryobi corded to $100 Dewalt Cordless. Useful tool for delicate cuts, curved cuts, shaving off trim. 4:42 - Table saw - Portable Dewalt Corded tables saw runs around $400. Invaluable tool. Easy to store. You really need this to cut shelves, boards, anything. Do not buy a cheap table saw it will be out of alignment. Best little sander to buy is the Dewalt Corded Random Orbit Sander for $65 - $100. Variable speed. Buy Diablo 5" disc hook and loop (Velcro) sandpaper in grits 80, 150, 220 for most projects. Mesh sandpaper is the absolute best. Attach your vacuum to it for even less dust. Do not buy a Palm Sander! You will always need a Studfinder - Zircon brand is good. HDepot has some sales going on now. $20 - $40. Locates the wood studs behind the wall so you can hang stuff easily. This is critical. My favorite tool is the Bosch Angle Grinder 5" with variable speed, paddle switch, and a continuous operation button. I buy the wire cup brushes from Harbor Freight - 4.5" or 4" accessories are fine on the 5". Use the wire brushes to remove rust so you don't waste sand paper. Use Flapdics for aggressive sanding. Use cutting wheels for slicing thru metal, grinding wheels for grinding down metal. Use diamond wheels for cutting tile, glass, concrete (spray water on these). You will love your angle grinder!!!! Best tool in the universe. Be a superhero of tools!

Most of the tools you’re seeing over and over again is a drill and various saws. You need a drill and can spend anywhere from $30 to $100 on a new one, or you can get one second hand. Most people have more than they need and it’s a common item to come across second hand. Bits for it aren’t expensive. Maybe $10 for an assorted set with everything you’d need. The only saws you’re likely to need are a skill saw and maybe a jig saw. The other saws you see just make things faster and easier. Same advice as above for price. Skill saws are about twice as expensive, but again, easy to come across second hand. If you do not have a drill as an adult, get one. That’s like not having a hammer or screwdriver. There are just some things you need to have and know how to use an an adult.

I feel that, too! I always buy used furniture because I want solid wood, not sawdust & glue. When people do 'shabby chic' because restoration is too much effort-- I cringe. Then again, they are using it. Which is better than it ending up in a landfill. To each their own, right? 😉

It's great having a handyman dad, because whenever I watch these kinds of videos I have his voice in my head pointing out all of the flaws, and why many of these projects are going to fall apart really quickly! I feel sorry for the people who do these types of projects expecting to make a quality product, only to realise they've wasted their time and money! For the record, using the right tool and/or product is essential to creating a quality product!!! For example, the amount of times I've seen people use a hot glue gun when that is one of the weakest glues around, and is ENTIRELY INAPPROPRIATE for their project is insane! Different materials require different glues, and how you use the final product can determine which type of glue is the most appropriate out of all the types of glues that material works well with! If you want to do a project and you're unskilled, do your research! Don't assume the person in the videos knows what they're doing!

Hot glue guns are amazing for what they are designed to do and that is glueing fabric onto other fabric or anything similar. The hot plastic melts in between the spaces of the fibers and when it hardens it will stay in place while still having some bend with the fabric. For anything else, it's complete and utter crap

Recycled materials and up-cycled pieces make creating beautiful things more affordable. Save even ugly old hardware you remove; it makes a great base for vintage buttons to become classy drawer pulls, or practicing new techniques.

Well, like it was in one cartoon - to throw away something unnecessary u should first BUY smth unnecessary. So maybe just STOP BUYING unnecessary stuff?

@Bambina Forever Agreed! I'm probably excessively thrifty by most people's standards, because I appreciate hand-me-downs, thrift stores, and even curbside rescues! 😉 Sometimes, I do collect things I don't personally need, because it allows me to bless others with no expense other than my time and effort. It feels good to know I have the skills to live simply. 😌
